Get recommended by ChatGPT

How to get your site recommended by ChatGPT

ChatGPT answers with a real retrieval index behind it. Getting recommended is not a trick — it is being the clearest, best-evidenced answer to the question a user just asked. Here is how its crawlers work and what to do, step by step.

How ChatGPT finds sources

OpenAI runs three distinct crawlers, and they do different jobs. GPTBot gathers content for training future models. OAI-SearchBot builds the search index that ChatGPT's web answers retrieve from — this is the one that determines whether you can be cited today. ChatGPT-User fetches a page live when a user's question needs it.

When a user asks something, ChatGPT breaks the question into smaller sub-queries (fan-out), retrieves candidate pages for each, and assembles an answer from the sources that answer each sub-query most directly. Pages that state facts plainly, with evidence, win those retrievals.

2026 research consistently shows AI citations are not a copy of Google rankings — analyses put the overlap between Google's top links and AI-cited sources below 20%, and Ahrefs found over a quarter of ChatGPT's most-cited pages have no Google organic visibility at all. Ranking #1 is neither necessary nor sufficient here.

The ChatGPT playbook

  1. 1Let the right crawlers inCheck your robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. Many sites blanket-blocked "AI bots" in 2023-24 and accidentally removed themselves from ChatGPT answers. Our free robots checker shows exactly who you're blocking.
  2. 2Answer questions, not keywordsWrite H2s as the literal questions buyers ask ("How much does a pet trust cost in New York?") and answer in the first sentence beneath. Fan-out retrieval matches sub-questions to the clearest available answer.
  3. 3Make every page fact-denseNamed statistics, verbatim quotes, primary-source citations. GEO research measured up to ~40% higher AI visibility for pages with dense, attributable evidence — it is the single strongest on-page lever.
  4. 4Ship llms.txt and clean structureA concise llms.txt gives assistants a map of what you're authoritative about. One H1, question-shaped H2s, FAQPage and Article schema — structure is how machines skim.
  5. 5Be present where ChatGPT already looksComparison pages, review roundups, and community threads get cited constantly. An earned mention in a list that ChatGPT already trusts often does more than ten new blog posts.

What doesn’t work (so you don’t pay for it)

  • Paying for placement — there is no ad unit inside organic ChatGPT answers to buy.
  • Keyword stuffing — retrieval is semantic; repeating a phrase 40 times adds nothing.
  • Ranking #1 on Google and waiting — the citation overlap is too low to rely on.

ChatGPT, answered plainly

How do I get my website recommended by ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User in robots.txt, publish question-shaped pages with dense verifiable facts, add llms.txt and FAQ/Article schema, and earn mentions on the comparison and review pages ChatGPT already cites. Then verify with a crawl check — our free audit runs one in 60 seconds.

Can I check if ChatGPT can read my site?

Yes — your robots.txt decides it. Run our free robots.txt AI-crawler checker: it tests OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and friends explicitly and shows exactly what's blocked.

Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT answers?

No. GPTBot is the training crawler. Citations come from the search index built by OAI-SearchBot and live fetches by ChatGPT-User — those are the two you must not block.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

There is no fixed timeline and nobody can guarantee one. Newly indexable, well-evidenced pages have been observed in citations within days to weeks; authority mentions compound over months. Be suspicious of anyone promising a date.
