AI Visibility 101: how to find out if ChatGPT recommends you
Buyers now ask AI assistants for recommendations before they ever search. How AI visibility differs from rankings, the four things to measure, and how to check your own brand today.
The question your dashboard can't answer
Your analytics can tell you every keyword you rank for and still not answer the question that decides deals in 2026: when someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini for a recommendation in your category, do you come up? Those conversations happen off your site, leave no referrer, and are invisible to classic SEO tooling — which is exactly why most brands have no idea where they stand.
AI visibility is the discipline of measuring and improving your presence in those answers. It overlaps with SEO — engines still read the open web — but it rewards different things: verifiable claims, clean structure, machine-readable context, and sources an assistant can quote without embarrassment.
The four things to measure
Presence: for the questions your buyers actually ask, are you mentioned at all? Position: are you the recommendation, one option among five, or a footnote? Sentiment: when you're described, is the framing one you'd accept? Citations: which of your pages do engines quote — because those are the pages to strengthen first.
Measure against real buyer prompts, not vanity phrasings. 'Best pet trust service for my dog' is a buyer prompt; your brand name plus 'review' is not — anyone asking that already knows you exist.
What actually moves the needle
Three levers, in order of leverage. First, be readable: robots.txt that admits AI crawlers, an llms.txt that explains you, structured data that labels what things are. Second, be checkable: claims grounded in sources an engine can verify — assistants increasingly double-check before repeating. Third, be the best answer somewhere specific: a page that fully answers one real question beats ten pages that half-answer broad ones.
Then close the loop: track the prompts, watch who owns each answer, and write next where you're absent. That loop — ask, measure, plant, re-measure — is the whole practice.
